At Artico Dental + Kids, we encourage our valued patients to maintain their routine dental exam and cleaning in Duncanville. Our preventive services are designed to halt the onset or progression of dental disease to allow you to have a healthy smile that lasts a lifetime!

How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?

The American Dental Association recommends scheduling dental visits at intervals determined by your dentist. Our patients typically require dental exams and cleanings every six months. However, some of our patients with periodontal (gum) disease or those at risk of developing tooth decay may require more frequent dental care.

What Happens During Dental Exams?

During your dental exam, we will evaluate every aspect of your oral health. We'll start with digital dental X-rays to reveal any areas of concern that we can't see during a physical examination, including early decay, bone loss, or other abnormalities.

We'll conduct a tooth by tooth examination to check for signs of damage or decay, and then we'll perform a periodontal exam to evaluate your gum health and ensure you're free of gum disease. We'll also examine your bite and conduct an oral cancer screening to rule out abnormalities. Your exam will include an aesthetic evaluation to find out if your smile would benefit from cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening.

After your exam, we will share our findings with you. We may recommend preventive or restorative procedures, if needed, to maintain your healthy smile. We may also recommend cosmetic procedures to enhance the appearance of your smile.

What Happens During Dental Cleanings?

At Artico Dental + Kids, we offer two types of dental cleanings. Routine cleanings are recommended for patients with healthy smiles, while deep cleanings are needed to combat periodontal disease.

Routine Dental Cleanings: During your professional dental cleaning, our dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup from around your gum line and between your teeth using a dental instrument called a scaler. Next is polishing your teeth to remove surface stains and professional flossing to remove any remaining plaque and debris between your teeth. Dental cleanings have been shown to lower the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Deep Dental Cleanings: Deep cleanings, also known as scaling and root planing, are considered the first line of defense against periodontal disease. The first part of the treatment, called scaling, is similar to what you'd experience during a routine dental cleaning. Root planing, on the other hand, involves carefully cleaning and smoothing the tooth root surfaces to promote gum tissue healing.
